A custom built wood pilothouse powerboat for fishing and family boating, featuring low power and good speed.

Traditional look, New idea
The shop nickname for this design has been the "Sustainability 29." That's a mouthful, so we settled on the "Salty 29." Take a close look at this design if you want a salty, low maintenance, shallow draft, low fuel consumption boat. Like all our Nexus designs, this is a very stable and seaworthy boat. A high bow, raised deck, side decks and coamings, and self-bailing cockpit all add up to seaworthiness. I would not hesitate to take this boat up to Alaska or down the coast to Mexico. Since it is such an easily driven hull, fuel consumption will be quite reasonable.

Outboard power
We chose outboard power for this boat for several reasons:
First, outboard power enabled us to design a trailerable 29' boat that will do almost 20 mph on 60 horsepower and sell for much less than other custom 29' boats.
Second, if fuel costs go up you can easily repower with whatever the latest thing in motors might be. Diesel? Fuel cell? Electric? We know that industry responds to demand. There will always be an appropriate motor for this boat. Ten horsepower is really plenty of power for this design.
Third, when you tilt the motor up, there's no metal in the water, so no corrosion. Again, low maintenance.
Fourth, outboards are light and cheap to install.
Fifth, because the bottom is almost flat at the transom, the boat will take the mud upright with the motor tilted up. Berthing costs can be zero if you live in an area with some shallow bays. That might also be important in the sustainable boating future. And this boat is easily trailerable. That's already important and can only become more so.

Appearance
We think the traditional appearance and elegance will turn heads everywhere you go. This a boat that people will change course to see. It will be finished in the usual Nexus fashion with teak soles and Awlgrip paint. We find that is the lowest maintenance in the long run. The very small amount of teak trim will be finished bright.

The Arrangement
Starting forward and working aft, there's a capacious chain locker in the bow. Aft of that is a 6'8" V-berth that makes into a double. There is 4' sitting headroom over that berth. A Porta-Potti is under the berth. It can be removed and put in the cockpit at night if you like. Aft of the berth is a simple galley with a two-burner stove and a deep sink with fresh water from a flipper pump. Because the galley is under the hardtop, you can stand up while working in the galley. A removable hatch and folding doors can close off the forecabin. The cockpit has a pair of pedestal chairs. We can install other cabinetry or seating there, depending on your use. We can also build the boat with a tug-style pilothouse instead of the lobster boat shelter. That pilothouse can be left open, picnic style. Or, we can add a bulkhead and door, even a heater with a charley noble.

Deck Plan

The bulwark and cockpit coaming will give you a dry boat, even in heavy weather. Wide side decks make going forward easy. The forecabin is under a raised deck, which means that the cabin top goes all the way out to the bulwarks. This will make the cabin interior very wide and comfortable. Forward of the cabin, the bulwarks form a well deck, where you can work and stow your anchor comfortably. We can install a bow rail for additional comfort and safety.

A few details
This boat is built using the epoxy saturation technique, or WEST SYSTEM. There will be less maintenance than with a fiberglass hull. The hull form features a warped plane bottom with developed surfaces. This means both a wide, efficient speed range and economical construction. While the bottom is almost flat at the transom, the bottom deadrise is over 60° at the bow and 18° under the helm. The topsides feature good flare at the bow and a tumblehome transom. The outboard is hidden in a well aft of the cockpit. It tilts up entirely inside the boat. A cutout in the transom allows the prop wash to exit the well. A hatch provides good access to the motor. Because the motor is isolated in this stern compartment, it will be very quiet.
